TR/ST – Performance
On September 13, 2024, TR/ST released its fifth full-length studio album, Performance, marking a critical milestone in the project’s institutional history. The record is the first full-length release under the banner of the influential darkwave label Dais Records, which Alfons joined in late 2023. This signing initiated a prolific creative phase, beginning with the unannounced drop of the self-titled TR/ST EP on January 26, 2024—featuring collaborations with Jake Shears and Cecile Believe—before culminating in the release of Performance later that autumn.
Unlike the rural farmhouse environment of previous sessions, Performance was written and recorded in the sprawling, light-polluted landscape of Los Angeles. This shift in geography directly mirrors the album’s thematic underbelly, which simmers with an acute sense of urban dread, abandonment, and late-night lust. Structurally, the album consists of nine cohesive tracks co-produced alongside Angeleno electronic composer Nick Weiss, known professionally as Nightfeelings. The production is characterized by a dense, smoky atmosphere that relies on heavy, pulsating basslines, vintage ’80s-inspired synthesizer architectures, and highly meticulous engineering.
The technical execution of the album involves several key industry collaborators, adding significant sonic polish to Alfons’ vulnerable compositions. Mixing engineer Chris Coady mixed the majority of the tracklist, while Damian Taylor stepped in to mix “Soon” and “The Shore”. The mastering was executed by veteran engineer Mike Bozzi, ensuring that the heavy low-end and delicate high-register synth pads achieve absolute clarity on physical formats. Furthermore, the album integrates external production contributions from Cecile Believe on the eerie track “Dark Day” and Chicken on the lead single “All At Once”.
The record acts as a sonic tightrope between anthemic dancefloor energy and internal collapse. Tracks such as “Soon” (released as a single in May 2024) and “The Shore” (which originally surfaced as a standalone single in 2022) provide dense, melancholic textures reminiscent of slow-burn dream pop. Meanwhile, “Regret” and “Boys of LA” deliver sharper, club-ready tempos that bridge the historical gap between electroclash and modern darkwave. Through this complex architecture, Performance successfully captures the essence of an artist navigating the delicate boundary between public theater and private grief.
The electronic music project TR/ST was founded in Toronto in 2010 and stands as one of the most prominent forces in the modern darkwave and synth-pop revivals. Initially established as a collaborative duo between producer-vocalist Robert Alfons and Austra drummer Maya Postepski, the project transitioned into Alfons’ solo vehicle following Postepski’s departure in late 2012. Stylistically, TR/ST is defined by its synthesis of sparkling synth-pop hooks, gritty industrial club beats, and a highly theatrical vocal delivery that shifts effortlessly between a slithering, low-register baritone and an ethereal, affected falsetto. Over a fourteen-year history, Alfons has consistently explored the narrative boundaries of late-night psychodrama, weaving themes of isolation, sexual tension, and somatic alienation into a distinctively nocturnal soundscape.
