Future Islands – From a hole in the floor to a fountain of youth

On May 22, 2026, the Baltimore-based post-wave quartet Future Islands released From a Hole in the Floor to a Fountain of Youth through their long-term record label, 4AD. This release does not represent an eighth traditional studio LP, but it rather serves as a career-spanning, 20th-anniversary archival compilation.

By compiling twenty tracks across a double-LP format, the 2026 release maps the band’s transition from a regional DIY performance art project to an internationally recognized live act. Rather than putting together a standard, hits-oriented commercial compilation, the band opted for an alternative historical narrative. The compilation collects out-of-print singles, split EP contributions, Japan-only bonus tracks, and long-circulating fan favorites, with approximately half of the tracks appearing on digital streaming services for the first time.

The title of the compilation, selected by bassist William Cashion, originates from a lyric in their 2009 song “Pinnochio”. The conceptual framing of the “hole in the floor” represents the gritty reality of their early touring days, while the “fountain of youth” symbolizes the transformative, almost magical experience of sustaining a life built entirely around shared creative goals.

The compilation’s tracklist operates as a sonic timeline of their structural evolution. Early tracks like “The Happiness of Being Twice” (2009) highlight a raw, lo-fi keyboard energy, whereas mid-career selections like “In the Fall” (2010) and “The Fountain” (2012) display an elegant, slow-burning grandiosity. Crucially, the collection details the band’s collaboration with various producers over two decades, including Chester Endersby Gwazda (who produced their early independent catalog) Chris Coady, and Jim Eno.

Among the rare inclusions is “Cotton Flower” (2012), a track previously limited to a digital download and a 7-inch vinyl pressing. The album also presents “Rager,” a previously unreleased demo in which Herring openly sings about his historical struggles with addiction and depression. To promote the release, the band issued two preview singles: “Sail,” a song from 2025 originally pressed as a VIP tour-only 7-inch, and “Find Love,” an uptempo b-side from 2011.

Future Islands was established in January 2006 in Greenville, North Carolina, before permanently relocating to Baltimore, Maryland, in 2008. The band’s core lineup consists of vocalist Samuel T. Herring, keyboardist and programmer Gerrit Welmers, bassist and guitarist William Cashion, and drummer Michael Lowry, who joined as a touring member in 2014 before achieving full member status in 2020.
